Today was my first official day on the job at O'Currance. Here are the reasons it sucked:
1. The amp box I was given is a piece of crap. What is supposed to happen is you plug your phone in the wall, then you plug the end of the curly cord that goes into the handset into the back of your amp box instead. Then the amp box plugs into the wall as well and your headset plugs into the amp box. I did this with the phone I had and it let me log into Avaya (the phone server at O'Currance) but the headset didn't work. We went to DI and picked up another phone for $3. No luck. Couldn't even hear a dial tone. So David went to Wal-mart, bought another phone, brand new, for $25. We set it up and we could hear and log in, so we went to bed, only to find out when it was time for work that the microphone wasn't being heard. I know it's the amp box because when I switch boxes with David my headset works great. However, if I used another curly cord and plugged the handset from the phone into the second jack at the back of my amp box, I was able to take calls on that. Therefore I sat at my computer for 9.5 hours with my shoulder holding up a regular handset. AND I have to do it again on Sunday and Monday mornings until the front desk people are back at work and I can drive to SLC for a new one. I could have driven to SLC and worked in the call center, but I would have lost even more time (I already lost my first hour) and the restrictions are much higher in the call center (can't eat at the computer, can't check e-mail, etc). Needless to say, I can't WAIT for a new amp box, and it BETTER work.
2. My stats were not where I wanted them to be. I ended the day around 34-35%, out of 40+ calls. All together I had 16 total sales. David assures me this is a still pretty good (he ended almost identical to me), but we are able to see live team stats throughout the day, and compared with the rest of the team I really wasn't doing all that well. Most of my team was apparently getting a lot of lucky calls because most of them were above 50%. It was frustrating because the hardest thing (I think) to sell is "Your Baby Can Read" because it's a 30-day Risk Free trial, and the infomercial doesn't give the full price, and a lot of people hang up when you tell them it's $200. That's what happened to me. I took almost 30 YBCR calls and only sold 7.
3. It was a LONG night, well kind of. The time goes pretty quick, especially when you're on calls, but being my first night, my body wasn't used to being awake from 1:30 AM until 1:00 PM. I tried my hardest to go to bed early last night (like 5:00 PM), but my body wouldn't sleep until around 10:00 PM or so. I was actually surprised...I didn't have to struggle too much to stay awake, but I could feel the fatigue setting in. Luckily, the babysitting gig we had for today fell through (sick nephew) so we were able to nap from 2:30ish PM until 7:30ish PM. Tomorrow our first shift is at 1:45 AM and our last shift ends just before it's time to get ready for church (about 10:00 AM), so I know I will be napping after church. However, I need to make some phone calls to Ohio for Father's Day....and because of the time change I shouldn't wait until after my nap. I hope I can stay awake!
However, here are the reasons it was totally awesome:
1. I got to work from home. As annoying at it was to hold that phone to my ear the whole night, at least I could work in my PJs, eat breakfast between calls, and surf the net while on the clock. Working in the office just isn't as cool.
2. David was so excited to have someone to talk to all night. I enjoyed the company as well and appreciated his assistance a couple times when I had questions I needed answered. He hates working in the office as well and was proud of me for working that whole time with the stupid handset. That kind of made it all worth it for me, especially because my sore neck has a guarantee of a nice massage. :)
3. Even though my stats weren't quite where I wanted them, I still made some good money. I make $11.00 base plus commission, and even though my YBCR conversion was pretty low, I still got those 7 sales, and each one is worth $2.50 without any upsales; the most of any product. Of those 7 sales, I did get upsales on 4 of them, which adds more commission on top of that. I also sold 6 of 8 on our Back2Life product, 2 for 3 on Bullet Express, and 1 for 1 on Youthology, and of all those sales, 5 had upsales. Technically, 8 had upsales, but 3 of them were 1-pay only (they pay the whole price at once instead of payments), which pays a few pennies but doesn't count toward my upsale statistics. So overall, I feel pretty good about my abilities.
4. Because I worked so many hours today and will tomorrow, I get overtime this weekend, which bumps my base pay to $15 per hour. Show me the money!
5. I had a comfy chair, and I was able to stay awake OK. My throat almost gave out a few times, but overall, I really don't know how much more comfortable I can be while on the computer.
Anyway, Monday will be busy. We work until 8:45 AM, then we are going to SLC to get me a new amp box, then we have to be in Ogden for my 3:20 appointment. AHHH!! I get to see my baby!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait. Seriously. SO. PUMPED.
